THYROID FUNCTION TESTS
The primary test for hypothyroidism is FT4 – free T4. Many people do not question the outcome of thyroid blood tests., or for that matter ask for a copy, which they are entitled to, they are YOUR tests. Some patients cannot understand why these tests do not work. No one tells them that because the T4 level in their blood is within the range, (set decades ago) does not mean that they will be well. Ask where you are in the tested range, usually those who feel well on thyroid therapy supplements have a range of around 75% - 85% of the upper limit. Low levels below 40% of the ranges can be debilitating to the patient. To be euthyroid (neither hypo or hyper) depends on the individual. Always check your pulse and temperature regularly.
Often low doses are offered from your GP, which can make the patient worse. Many people are toxic to Thyroxine/Synthroid and feel very ill while taking it. Thyroxine has additives, maize and e-numbers added in some of the cheaper brands. Lactose is often added. Do check the added ingredients with your pharmacist when collecting your prescription.
The taking of Thyroxine/Synthroid induces a welfare state upon the thyroid and TSH, (thyroid stimulating hormone), usually decreases. The average level of T4 prescribed for an adult is 125mcgs. How much you need depends on your body size. This level just covers you and 150mcgs is the commonly prescribed dose. If you are gaining weight and yet eating the correct diet do check your daily dose. The more weight you carry the more thyroid you may need.
Many doctors and endocrinologists seem to think Thyroxine is a supplement to the person’s own thyroid. This simply is not true because the brain says that it does not need to make TSH, (thyroid stimulating hormone), any more and shuts this hormone down to trace levels. Low levels of Thyroxine are dangerous, and should always be questioned. (See Blood Tests Information sheets for more details of ranges, tests etc.) The FT3, (free thyroid 3 circulating in the blood unbound), test is the third test that should be done. Many people cannot convert T4 into T3 because of low liver function. Eating high carbohydrates and low oils and proteins can cause this. HRT, emotions and alcohol, also can cause this downturn. Many women become hypothyroid when taking pharmaceutical HRT and other medications, anti-depressants for example, which also affects T4 to T3 conversion in the liver. G.P.’s rarely prescribe T3 because it is more expensive, another name for T3 is Cytomel or Cynomel, (Jones is the best). Please contact us for natural thyroid suppliers by mail order.
The legislation on RX pharmaceutical medicines is clear. You can import for yourself only and a maximum of 6 months supply.
MEDICINE
The two commonly used medications are Thyroxine/Synthoid and natural thyroid - Bovine thyroid is from free-range organic cows in the USA or NZ. Some people actually need T3, (Cytomel) and not T4, but this is not usually blood tested. If you are a drinker, eat a low fat/oil/protein diet and take other pharmaceuticals it may be T3 that is the problem. Starvation can also cause reverse T3. Parasites in the liver (flukes) can also cause T3 problems.
Some people are unable to utilise Thyroxine effectively, indeed may be toxic to it, and may need T3 – Tertroxin/Cytomel/Cynomel instead. With some they do not have enough carrier protein, for example they may have had a hysterectomy or are taking Warfarin/anticoaglants or anti cholesterol drugs. Perhaps cortisol levels are too low - this usually happens after a high carbohydrate meal - we simply run out.
BONES
Taking thyroid tablets also usually affects bone density. Reduced TSH can have an affect on parathyroid function. Parathyroid glands regulate bone density. If our calcium levels are too low at night blood can take calcium from the bones. Within two years this has usually dramatically reduced, and you may need to take sea or coral calcium supplement, which is calcified food state seaweed, ground coral or Calcium plus other vitamins like vitamin D. Low calcium can also cause weight gain. Too much can cause kidney problems so do be tested for the correct supplement (if required) and the dose. Calcium is vital to well-being.
Iron can also be low in hypothyroid patients. CoQ10 is usually low too.
